High-Arctic fjord-valleys commonly host permafrost, but are poorly accessible and hence have drawn relatively little research. The research presented in this thesis combines the methods of cryostratigraphy, clastic sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, geomorphology and geochronology to investigate the sedimentary infilling, permafrost. The ice front melt rate of a glacier in South Cape Fiord, EUesmere Island, is approximately m a -1 (after Horne, ) which is negligible when compared to terminus retreat rates of 10 to m a -1 observed in Canada's Arctic fjords (Syvitski, ). This melt rate is equivalent to % of the annual flux of freshwater to the fjord. the Sedimentology of Arctic Fjords Experiment (S.A.F.E.) cruise of the CSS Hudson and were reinterpreted from an ichnological point of view. ABSTRACT The local climatic regime and the mass balance state are important determinants of the dynamics of terrestrial and marine glacier fronts, which in turn determine the sediments and landform.
